First I am a Catholic, second I am a photographer.
Wedding photography has always been an area of this industry that I never planned to venture into. There are a variety of reasons for this (which I won’t bore you with now) but let’s just say that this shift in desire and goals was a surprise even to me.
I knew that in choosing to add weddings into my business it would need to be a very prayerful, deliberate decision. And I wanted it to mean something. Niching down and setting limits are great and necessary, and definitely a few key reasons for this move. And clearly my faith is extremely important to me – it makes me who I am. I am a Catholic before I am a photographer. But even beyond that, I wanted to serve an area or community that needed me, where my God-given gifts, knowledge, and passions were best utilized. Photographing exclusively Catholic weddings was the path that God made abundantly clear.
“Art is meant to move your soul – by its beauty – to the good.”
Someone extremely holy and wise said this recently amidst a particularly transformational spiritual experience. This truth statement, in conjunction with this experience and rigorous prayer, is ultimately what confirmed my decision to add Catholic wedding photography to my business.
Beauty points us toward heaven, toward the divine, and reveals what is true. Therefore, creating beautiful things, if rightly ordered, is in service of God’s Kingdom and purpose.
Photographing Catholic weddings is one of the ways in which I hope to point others toward the good. In capturing the beauty of the Catholic wedding mass and the love of two God-pursuing people, I hope to be an instrument of the Lord in revealing what is true.
